Welcome to the Basking Shark Project

Reaching lengths of up to 11 metres, Basking Sharks are the largest fish in British waters.  One of only three plankton-feeding shark species, these harmless giants reappear in our coastal waters each summer.

Don't forget to contact the Shark Trust if you see a Basking Shark - your sightings are crucial in helping understand and protect these magnificent animals!

A Basking Shark...breaching?

Each summer the Shark Trust receives reports of 'White Sharks' breaching off the coast of Cornwall.

What many people don't realise is that Basking Sharks, like White Sharks, also leap clear of the water...regularly!  Marine biologists think breaching could be part of Basking Shark courtship behaviour - read more here...
